July: Ruby
July’s birthstone is the royal Ruby. This bright red gemstone is one of the most well-known, right up there with diamonds, emeralds, and sapphires. The linen for July’s setting needs to be as bright and rich as sparkling ruby, so we chose BBJ’s Rhythm Red, a glossy tablecloth with a fun zigzag texture that captures the light and shadows to create depth. We paired this with a matching yet only subtly textured napkin, Shantung Poppy. To finish the look with a royal flair, we set the table with the gold and silver filigreed Majestic china and a set of fine silver flatware.
August: Peridot
August’s birthstone is the glowy, light green Peridot. This bright, happy gem is found among the molten rock of the earth’s upper mantle, which is fitting for the stone that marks what is often the hottest month of the year. To create a setting based on this last birthstone of summer, we started with BBJ’s Bamboo Aloe, a crisp white linen with light green geometric pattern. We matched this light green in the Tuscany Spring napkin and completed the setting with a simple white china set and the clean lines of stainless steel Arezzo flatware.
September: Sapphire
September’s birthstone, the Sapphire, naturally occurs in many colors and shades, but when most people picture a sapphire it is typically a deep shade of royal blue. To mimic this beautiful depth in linen form, we chose BBJ’s Lamour Sapphire cloth to start out September’s setting. With this cloth we chose an Ombre Sapphire napkin to add some texture, and we finished the setting with the perfectly matching Blue Embossed china set and some bright silver flatware.
October: Opal
October’s birthstone, Opal, is truly unique with its milky white surface and iridescent flecks of color. There is no one linen that can accurately portray this incredible stone, but our Light Blue Iridescent Crush cloth, with its ability to shift from a light blue to a pale pink, comes close. An Iris Blue napkin with its pattern of milky white dots beautifully accents this cloth, and we finish the look with a simple silver band china set and matching silver flatware.
November: Topaz
November’s birthstone, Topaz, can range in color from pale blue to deep orange, but it is most recognizable in its golden, amber-colored form, the perfect color for the last month of autumn. A Golden Velvet linen is perfect for this month’s setting, capturing the rich color of the topaz and bringing warmth to the party as the cooler weather rolls in. We chose a napkin in a matching color but contrasting texture, the semi-glossy Shantung Daffodil. A gold banded ivory china set suits this setting well, and a set of gold Arezzo flatware completes it.
December: Tanzanite
December is the last month of the year, and it has a birthstone with just the right amount of pizzazz to mark the year’s end. This dark, rich stone can look almost black in shadow, but in the light the deep blues and violets of this gemstone are dazzling. For the tanzanite-inspired place setting, we chose the stunning BBJ Dupionique Iridescence Grape which shifts in the light from blue to purple. We brought out more of the violet-blue tones in the napkin by choosing Lamour Purple, then chose a sleek and modern charcoal china set to call back to the stone’s darkness and depth. Gold Arezzo flatware finishes the look with a bit of contrast and modern elegance.
