Home is where the heart is, but the heart doesn’t stop beating at the back door. In fact, that space right outside the door is often one of the places the heart loves the most. The backyard is where we work, we play, we spend time together, and we make precious memories. Sometimes we grill out, sometimes we play catch, sometimes we plant flowers or read a good book, and sometimes we invite all our favorite people over to celebrate, compete, or reconnect. The backyard event can be exceptionally fun, but it can also be a little bit challenging. If you want more fun and less challenge at your next backyard event, don’t forget to do these 5 things.
Know the rules and regulations
If you live in a neighborhood with an HOA, you may already be aware of community rules and regulations you must adhere to in hosting a backyard event. However, even if you don’t have an HOA, there may still be local laws and ordinances that you must take into account when planning your event. Before you get fined for making too much noise or clogging the street with cars, check your local laws for noise ordinances, maximum occupancy rules, and traffic regulation. Also be sure to obtain any necessary permits for temporary structures or alcohol. Once all the legal paperwork is in order, it may also pay to stay in your neighbors’ good graces by informing them of upcoming events that have the possibility of being loud or disruptive to their normal schedule.
Make tent preparations
If you plan to have a tent installed in your backyard, be sure to measure the space carefully and select a tent that will fit both the space and your needs. Before installation, mark any underground waterlines or sprinkler systems so the tent installers can avoid them when staking in the tent. Additionally, be sure to check overhead for any low-hanging tree limbs that may interfere with installation of the canopy. If you are not sure if the tent you need will fit in your space, schedule a free site visit and let one of our tent experts measure your yard and discuss your options.
Identify your outlets
If you plan to use any electricity for your backyard event – whether it be to power string lights, AV equipment, concession machines, or more – be sure to identify all your exterior outlets. Make sure you not only have enough outlets to plug everything in, but you also have enough wattage to power everything without overloading the breaker. If necessary, supplement additional power with generators, and make sure you have any extension cords you may need to carry electricity around the yard.
Check for hazards
Accidents happen, but it’s important to be proactive in minimizing the chance for serious injuries, especially when large guestlists are involved. Take a walk around your backyard and look for any hazards that an unsuspecting guest might stumble upon. Check for tools, toys, or potholes hiding in the grass, and inspect decks and railings for loose boards or popped nails. If you have a pool in your backyard and it is not being used for the party, be sure it is properly covered or secured, especially if small children are present. Finally, if your event is happening in the evening, make sure there is adequate outdoor lighting for your guests to move safely around the space.
Think trash and toilets
If you are only having a few friends or family members over, your home bathroom and trash bin are probably sufficient. However, if you expect a host of guests to attend your backyard event, you may need to supplement extra bathrooms and trash cans to keep your guests comfortable and your yard clean. Porta potties can be rented for informal events, but formal event guests may appreciate a rented restroom trailer. Cardboard disposable trash cans are an easy and affordable trash solution, or you can rent sturdy rubber trash bins to get the job done.
