The Hottest Christmas Decor Trends of 2024
Posted by: Sarah Lawen Smith Dec 07, 2024

It’s Christmas season, and we are already seeing some fun and unique decoration styles pushing their ways forward as the top trends of the season. These trends are popping up on Christmas trees, mantles, front doors, entryways, and dining rooms. What are these trends and how can you implement them into your holiday decor? Check out these 5 curated looks to find out!

Ribbons and Bows

Perhaps the cutest Christmas decor trend to come out of 2024 is the focus on ribbons and bows. This trend is inspired by the traditional velvet bows that hang from wreaths and satin ribbons that tie up presents from loved ones. This trend also draws heavily from 2024 fashion trends, drawing inspiration from the Coquette style that emphasizes soft, playful, femininity in its use of lace, frills, puff sleeves, and bows. To style this look, we chose an off-white linen with delicate floral embroidery (BBJ Gardenia Pearl) and paired it with a contrasting black velvet runner. For the place, we chose a simple white plate, demure burgundy napkin, and matted silver flatware, emphasizing simplicity and clean lines to really let the accessories shine. Speaking of accessories, this look is not finished until the star of the show arrives: the bows! Affix bows to Christmas trees, garlands, and wreaths, as well as to the backs of chairs, around napkins and candlesticks, and atop place settings. Opt for soft, flowy fabrics for the bows like velvet or satin, and tie bows by hand leaving long draping tails for the best effect. To avoid a cluttered look, keep other decor to a minimum, opting for simple evergreen fronds, glowing candles, and small twinkle lights.

Christmas Disco

Christmas is always a celebration, but for many it is a downright party! This sentiment is definitely showing in the 2024 Christmas disco trend. This trend is a nostalgic nod to the ‘70s, and it has a strong focus on mixed metallics, funky decor pieces, and reflective surfaces to allow those Christmas lights to bounce to every corner of the room. The star of this decor trend is, of course, the disco ball! It is round, sparkly, and closely resembles an ornament, so it is no surprise this glittering centerpiece made its way from the dance floor to the Christmas scene. To style this trend we started with a seemingly simple ivory linen that dazzles you with metallic threading when it catches the light just right (BBJ Contour Ivory). Draped over this we chose a runner adorned with square rose gold sequins. The place setting sports more metallic elements with its silver beaded charger, silver banded plate, and sunbeam detailed plaza flatware. We added a pop of color with a textured grapefruit colored napkin (BBJ Lenox Papaya). To finish this look, pair your traditional Christmas greenery with all things metallic. Bring on the tinsel, sequins, glitter, and mirror tiles, and don’t forget the disco balls! Hang them on your tree and from the ceiling, and nestle them among your centerpieces and table decor. Finish it off with plenty of string lights to really emphasize those reflective surfaces.

Rustic Woodsy

The rustic woodsy Christmas aesthetic is perhaps one of the oldest, calling back to simpler times when decorating with what nature and hardworking hands provided was the norm. Despite its archaic origins, this aesthetic seems to find its way back year after year. This year especially has seen an uptick in rustic Christmas decor with the popularity of cottagecore fashion and the resurgence of interest in connecting with nature, achieving self-sustainability, and learning to craft by hand. To style this trend, we started with a simple off-white linen with a settle woven texture (BBJ Homestead Ivory), and we paired this with woven beige runner (BBJ Verona Natural). The napkin we chose features a traditional Christmas plaid with a soft jute border (BBJ Highland-Sand Jute Edge). For the place setting, we chose a gold-banded ivory plate and matching gold flatware. To finish this look, focus your decor on the natural. Choose live potted plants like evergreen saplings, decorate with salt dough ornaments, wood cuts, and dried fruits like cranberries and orange slices, and light up the room with cozy, flickering candlelight. This decor style also offers the perfect opportunity to light a fire fireplace or woodstove and start a simmer pot of aromatic fruit slices and warm spices.

Anti-Traditional Color Explosion

Another fun trend that is popping up in the 2024 Christmas scene is the pastel and neon color explosion that openly defies traditional Christmas colors schemes. Where many Christmas trends this year are toned down and minimalistic, this trend is the polar opposite with its maximalist aesthetic, bright colors, and non-traditional decor. You won’t find burgundies, forest greens, and evergreens with this decor trend! To style this trend, we started with a white textured linen (BBJ Brimble Pearl) to provide a clean base for the color to pop off of. Draped over this we added a bright green patterned velveteen runner (BBJ Celeste Apple Green) and offset it with a watermelon-pink bordered napkin (BBJ Bocca with Watermelon Trim). We added more color to the table by choosing our blue embossed plate set and accessorizing it with playful chateau flatware. To really bring this look to life, choose non-traditional colored faux trees, garlands, and wreaths (think hot pink, lime green, or even teal), and choose decor pieces that are bright, colorful, and over the top. You can choose non-traditional takes on traditional decor, like glittery pastel nutcrackers and neon-colored stringlights, or you can depart from tradition completely by adding in bright feathers, pom poms, and cow print.

Modern Traditional

The modern traditional Christmas style is easily the most familiar, and this is on purpose. This style is focused on keeping alive those childhood Christmas memories of needlepoint stockings, mismatched ornaments, and warm incandescent lights, but with a touch of modern elegance and order. To style this trend, we started with simple white cotton linen with a forest green velvet runner draped down the center and a gold satin napkin at each place around the table. We wanted to keep the place settings simple with modern, clean lines, so we chose a simple white china plate and matted silver flatware. To really nail this look, decorate with your favorite classic Christmas greenery, incandescent string lights (skip the LEDs), candles, and ribbons. Choose a mixture of your favorite mismatched ornaments to display alongside some uniform red and gold baubles. Keep the placement of decorations minimal and purposeful as opposed to trying to fill every empty space. This minimal, purposeful placement and utilization of empty space is what sets the modern traditional style apart from simple tradition.
